Welcome to the FISH Lab!
Are you interested in flourishing? Please allow us to share what we mean when we use this word. Some define flourishing as a state where all aspects of one's life are good, not just for the person, but for their community and surrounding environment. Our understanding and characterization of flourishing is slightly different. We describe flourishing not so much as a state, but rather as an active, dynamic, ebbing and flowing quality of one's life or way of being that can manifest in the day to day moments of our lives. It's not so much that "all aspects" of one's life need to be in sync to flourish, but on the contrary, any aspects of one's life.

Our research lab is dedicated to better understanding the role of flourishing on human health, the health of our society, and the health of our planet, including an understanding that flourishing can be a learned skill and positive health behavior that may be experienced, practiced, and maintained throughout our lives. Much of this work focuses on supporting people affected by chronic medical conditions such as cancer and discovering ways to bring flourishing skills, behaviors, and opportunities to their lives in easy, accessible, and equitable ways.
Flourishing may appear when we are:
- Being curious and open to our experiences and how we might learn and grow from them;
- Intentionally showing up to our lives and relationships with authenticity, presence, and compassion;
- Engaging in personally meaningful and purpose-driven pursuits;
- Being mindfully awake, aware, and connected to ourselves, to others, and to the world in which we live.
